Day 18 - Germany calling...

TODAY'S post is earlier than usual as daddy has to go to Germany tonight.

It's a business trip to Berlin, but could also serve as useful reconnaissance prior to the World Cup there this summer.

Daddy visited the hospital this afternoon and bade Millie farewell, telling her he would be back tomorrow to see her as usual.

In return, Millie gave him one of her "I understand - it's quite all right" expressions.

She has put on 36 grammes (1 1/2 ounces) within the last 24 hours and now weighs as close to 3lb as it is possible to be without actually reaching it.

The nurses have upped her milk to 23ml (4 1/2 teaspoons) every two and a half hours.

This is part of the new regime of larger but less frequent feeds designed so she is eventually fed every four hours rather than every two.

Mummy is doing well too - visiting the hospital twice a day and spending much of the remaining time expressing milk.

At the moment, if everything carries on going well, it is just a case of Millie putting on enough weight so she can come home.

Each baby is different, but the hospital generally allows good babies home once they are 4 1/2lb or so.

A rough calculation means Millie could be home in another five or six weeks - which would be an ideal birthday present for her daddy (8 April).

But it's Mother's Day before then and she might just be able to sneak out of hospital for long enough to get her mummy a present too.
